What is important in having your home theater built?

It's important to plan ahead when it comes to the materials and construction of your home theater. Room acoustics play the most crucial role in your setup, as they significantly impact the overall movie experience. In fact, research shows that 60% of the sound experience shapes how a movie is perceived making acoustics a key factor in creating truly immersive entertainment.

Roadmap for building a home theater

Here’s a step-by-step guide to building your own home theater. Follow these steps to create the perfect cinematic experience in your home!

1. Building a home theater, where to start?

If you're serious about building a home theater, start with a solid plan. Many factors influence the final result, and they all need to be carefully coordinated. Work with a partner who can advise you on key elements such as sound insulation, room acoustics, equipment, speakers, TV, projector, projection screen, seating, and content playback.
Equally important is expert advice on air handling, heating, and cooling—after all, your home theater should be as comfortable as it is immersive.
At Mutrox, we specialize in professional studios, mix cinemas, and home theaters, giving us the expertise to seamlessly integrate all these elements. We consider every detail from the very start—ensuring perfect coordination right from the design phase.

2. Soundproofing a home theater: silence in the room!

The first step in building your home theater is soundproofing. After all, nothing should disrupt your movie experience—not street noise or sounds from the rest of the house. To keep unwanted noise out, proper sound insulation is essential. Equally important is containing the movie’s sound within the theater. The walls should be constructed to prevent resonance, absorb low frequencies effectively, and eliminate crosstalk between rooms. This ensures that your home theater delivers an immersive audio experience without disturbing the rest of your home.

3. Room acoustics of your home theater

Once soundproofing is in place, your home theater needs proper acoustic tuning. Without it, the bare room will produce excessive reverberation, causing sound signals to blend together and lose clarity. In this uncontrolled mix of sounds, definition and spatial placement are completely lost.
The acoustic profile of your home theater can be designed to match a standard or tailored to your personal preference. At Mutrox, we prefer to follow the Dolby standard. Based on the room’s volume, we calculate the ideal reverberation time at 500 Hz. From there, we design the optimal 'reverberation time curve' and fine-tune the acoustics using diffusers, bass traps, and absorbers to achieve perfect sound balance.

4. Audio format for your home theater

Nowadays there are a lot of audio formats. Where previously only 5.1 and 7.1 formats were among the choices, now we can also choose height channels. These let sound come from the ceiling! The formats we currently use most often are Dolby Atmos, Auro 3D and DTS-X.For a considered choice about the audio format for your home theater, listen to several audio formats. In Mutrox's showroom, you can listen to the mentioned audio formats in a specially equipped listening room.

5. Speakers for your home theater

When selecting an audio format, you also determine the placement of your speakers. After that, it's time to choose the right type of speaker. At Mutrox, we prefer working with Bowers & Wilkins—an esteemed English brand known for its wide range of high-quality speakers and natural sound reproduction.
In most cases, we recommend 'in-wall speakers'. They take up minimal space, seamlessly integrate into the interior, and eliminate sound interference issues like phase cancellation. To ensure the best audio experience, always choose speakers that match the timbre and size of your home theater.
Curious about how in-wall speakers sound? 6. Projection screen or TV in your home theater?

In our view, a true home theater always includes a projector and a projection screen. Why? First, a 21:9 aspect ratio projection screen provides a much more immersive movie experience compared to the 16:9 format of most TVs. Second, an acoustically transparent screen allows speakers to be placed behind it, making the sound feel like it’s coming directly from the movie itself.
With a TV, the center speaker is always positioned above or below the screen, which affects the directionality of the sound. While a TV is often a more affordable option than a projector and screen, keep in mind that it also adds a large reflective surface to the room, which can impact the acoustics.

7. Chairs or a lounge sofa in your home theater?

The final step in designing your home theater is choosing the number of seats. If you need plenty of seating, chairs are the most practical option. Be sure to choose comfortable ones—you’ll be sitting in them for at least 1.5 hours! Take your time testing different options with the supplier to ensure the best fit. Today, fully automated chairs and sofas can take your lounge cinema experience to the next level. If you prefer fewer seats, a cozy lounge sofa is a great alternative, offering maximum comfort and a relaxed feel.
Whether you go for chairs or a sofa, factor your seating into the acoustic design. Furniture can affect sound reflections, and the right upholstery can even help optimize sound quality.
