Unique luxury home theater in a special space

Client
Joris & Yvonne

What do you do with a room you have left over, has a single entrance and is a bit "crazy" in terms of shape? Turn it into a home theater, of course! Or, in the words of Joris: "The space is rather special, with its separate entrance via the stairs where all the equipment is, with the sloping roofs, the old brick wall that is still coming back, the height of the space... You can do a lot with it and then it is good that Mutrox has given the appropriate options in what is possible. As an individual, of course, you have no idea. You can think up all kinds of things, but it is difficult to imagine what is actually possible. Then it's nice when the company itself comes up with the options they see as realizable."

Mutrox sees it as a challenge to turn truly any room into a beautiful home theater. Joris and his family especially wanted a room where they could listen to music with good sound. To realize this, knowledge of acoustics and the right choice of all equipment and its proper adjustment are of utmost importance. They came, after considering all home cinema parties, to Mutrox. We designed a very special room for the family. In a special room...

The question

Joris and his wife Yvonne came to us with a request to transform a room above the kitchen that was actually left over into a good-sounding music room. However, when they saw that we were creating complete home theaters in addition to studios, the plan quickly expanded to include visuals. It was important that many different sources could be watched and listened to, such as DVDs, Blu-rays, Ziggo, Playstation, AppleTV, XBOX, Mediabox, karaoke... So we made sure this was possible. Dolby Atmos was also a requirement and a single remote control, which also had to control the lights.

Challenges were the rough unfinished brick wall on one side of the room, a window on the other side of the room that had to be able to be opened, and the sloping roof where the projector was to be located. Because the space gets very hot in the summer, air conditioning was also a requirement. A stage had to provide good visibility for the back row of seats. The entrance to the home theater had to be finished in an appropriate style by us as well. Since the upper floor is not directly adjacent to the neighbors all around, an insulating shell was not a requirement.

Specialist in cinema and studio construction

For almost more than 20 years we have been a household name in the world of designing, building and installing "turn key" studios and cinemas. Spaces where experience and creation play the greatest role and where you can escape from everyday life for a while.

The solution

Since Joris and Yvonne really had no idea what to do with the somewhat crazy shape of the space, we came up with some appropriate ideas. The 3D renderings impressed and gave a lot of motivation to have us realize the space. We wanted to emphasize the rough wall in the design by lighting it indirectly with LED. The window on the other side of the room can be approached by opening the acoustic panels on that side with a hinge. The equipment found its place in the stairwell next to the home theater. The great distance the HDMI signal had to travel was bridged by an HD BASE-T solution, which transmits HDMI signals over a CAT cable. By working with different levels in the ceiling, emphasized by indirect LED lighting,

gives the space an extra touch of luxury. The luxurious, fabric "love seat" seats make it great to relax in the space, and with the sofa in the back added, there is then also plenty of room for the rest of the family.

For the most holographic sound possible with the best possible channel-to-channel transitions, we chose Bowers & Wilkins 7 Series loudspeakers all around: seven CWM 7.4 S2 all around (concealed at the front behind the acoustically transparent screen) and four CCM 7.4 S2 loudspeakers on the ceiling. A Bowers & Wilkins ASW 610 XP with 1,000 W of power was concealed under the screen and provides a good bass foundation. All this is driven by a Marantz surround receiver.

To get the acoustics as right as possible, acoustic panels were installed on the walls all around, and the stage also serves as a "bass trap" for tighter lows. With indirect lighting, we created a spectacular look in the space, which can be controlled completely as desired using the Lutron lighting system in scenes selectable with the Savant remote control.

The result

For Mutrox, the question is never whether a home theater can be built in a room, but more how we can make it happen as quickly and well as possible for the customer! We can say that this has become a unique home theater with its very own look, where looks and image and sound quality blend perfectly together.

Joris and his family are super satisfied with the space and spend almost every day of the week there, "I think conservatively estimated that 6 or 7 times a week someone spends more than 2 hours in there. So almost daily." And the moviegoing experience? We let Joris do the talking: "When you watch that last James Bond, you hear sound, crackle and squeak of a burglar and then when someone shoots, you hear the bullet fly across the room, it's phenomenal. It's exactly as we envisioned beforehand, in terms of the quality, the use and what you do there, so we're very pleased with that."
