Stylish self-built Dolby Atmos 9.2.6 Mutrox Cinema

Client
Mario

In general, Mutrox builds "turn key" home theater spaces. This means that we take care of the entire process, from the design via the manufacturing of all interior parts to the installation and delivery. However, there are sometimes customers who like to take on part of the construction. So did Mario, who independently manufactured, upholstered and hung the acoustic panels on the wall. This included LED lighting and its control. He also made the stage/bass stairs for the second row of seats. Among other things, we built parts of the baffle wall and assembled the stretch ceiling. Mario liked the approach immensely: "If I ever had an empty space for a cinema again, I would do it exactly the same."

The question

Mario has long been a movie buff and has always dreamed of creating a separate room with good picture and sound. In the basement of his new home, there was plenty of room for this.

Mario's request to us was to design a perfect speaker layout for a 5 x 5 m section of his basement room. This required perfect matching of screen size, viewing distance, placement of all speakers including the crucial correct placement of the subwoofers. Design principles were the looks and sound quality of one of Mutrox's demonstration rooms, with wedge-shaped acoustic elements and LED lighting.

Since Mario wanted to do as much as possible himself, it was also up to us to create detailed construction drawings of the parts to be produced.

The solution

Mario wanted to build as much as possible himself, so we made construction drawings for him of the stage to be built, the acoustics panels and the baffle wall where the speakers and screen will be mounted in/on.

For the most 'immersive' experience possible, the choice was made to use as many channels of the Arcam receiver used as possible. This amounted to a Dolby Atmos 9.2.6 setup with left and right 'wide' speakers and 6 Atmos channels on the ceiling. Bowers & Wilkins CWM 7.3 s2 speakers were chosen for the front channels. The wide, side surround and rear surround channels are reproduced by Bowers & Wilkins CWM 7.4 s2s. Dual Bowers & Wilkins DB4S subwoofers were cleverly incorporated into the stage on either side, which, through a "spring floor" system, give an extra layer sensation to viewers in the back row.

For an image to match the quality of the sound, a JVC DLA-N5 4K HDR projector was installed. This projects its image onto a 3.5m wide "Cinemascope" acoustically transparent screen from Screen Research.

For perfect acoustics, we installed a black acoustic stretch ceiling containing warm white spotlights and Bowers & Wilkins CCM 7.5 s2 Atmos speakers, and Mario hung his home-made acoustic panels on the walls. Of course, the carpet in the room also helps bring down the reverberation time in the room.

The result

Mario worked with us to create a beautiful looking room with sublime picture and sound quality. It is very pleasant to be in the room, which is completely focused on an optimal experience. In the very comfortable cinema seats you are always in the best spot and the intimate atmosphere puts you right in the movie, concert or along the Formula 1 track.

Most importantly, however, Mario is extremely pleased with the end result and quite rightly makes great use of this wonderful space along with his family and friends.

Interview

After completing a project, we like to hear how our clients experienced the cooperation, and if they like the result.

This is what Klaas and Sophie thought:

How do you like the cinema?

Yes super!!! If I had an empty space again I would do it exactly the same. The whole thing has worked out very well and we use the cinema weekly for watching movies and Formula 1, but also for example Lego Masters with my oldest son. So the space is well used and likes it very much! Also as a place to rest: because it is nice and quiet, you can relax there.

Who make use of it?

I personally use it a lot with my family, friends and children. The nice thing about a space like this is that you can share it a bit with others too!

Does the latter happen often?

Yes, definitely! At least once or twice a month I organize a movie night with friends and with them I also watch Formula 1 weekly or bi-weekly. My in-laws also come to watch sometimes.

Which excerpt has impressed you the most so far?

I recently watched the latest James Bond - No Time To Die - and it did come across extremely well and the movie Le Mans '66 (Ford vs. Ferrari). I watched both of those on 4K Blu-ray because you do see and hear quality differences compared to streaming. The quality of streaming is not bad, but there seems to be more variation in quality, for example how the dialogue/effects come in over the center: a bit shrill or not at all, etc.

Why exactly did you want a cinema in your home?

From the age of 13-14, I have actually been into watching movies in higher quality as a hobby. I had a TV in my room that I connected my computer to in order to create a kind of cinematic experience. I have always had the dream and desire to have better speakers and better picture and at some point the opportunity arose to create a real room for that that was one plus one is two for me.

How did you come to Mutrox at the time?

I had been watching a program on RTL4 where Bowers & Wilkins had an item in it and was recorded in a Mutrox studio. That's how I found you guys. I went online and saw your portfolio and the things you had done. I got in touch with Ronald and he was so accessible and enthusiastic that I quickly made an appointment to come by. Ronald is a really nice guy so there was a click and trust very quickly. I did not start looking at other parties after that. I had a good feeling about it and the quality in everything was very high. The enthusiasm and passion were contagious.

How did you experience the process and collaboration with Mutrox and the team?

In the beginning, it took some searching how to handle certain things and what information I needed. It was a "blank sheet" for me, where for you many things are a bit more obvious. However, once I was paired with Marco [the project manager], it became clearer to me exactly what I needed and how to approach things. Then things gained momentum and all the questions I had and also the questions I didn't know I had were well answered.

Did you like or dislike building it yourself?

Once I knew what to do and what was what for, it didn't disappoint me. I did get tired of making all the same acoustic panels at one point, hahaha! The most fun I had was connecting the cables.

Are you likely to recommend Mutrox to others?

Definitely! The whole picture is just right! Both the quality and the perception that you give in advance and the further course and guidance you give to the completion I have experienced as very pleasant!
