Luxury custom home theater and high-end stereo room

Mutrox started as a company in studio construction. This is already more than 15 years ago. In that long time, we obviously gained a lot of experience in building soundproof rooms. After several years of studio construction, we decided that we could also put our knowledge to good use in building soundproof home cinemas. It is a great luxury to watch a movie in your basement or elsewhere in your house at maximum volume without others noticing.

The same goes for Herman in Valkenswaard. For him, Mutrox first built a soundproof insulating shell in his existing basement room. Then the room was beautifully decorated all around with custom acoustic panels. By using high-end audio and video equipment, watching and listening to movies and music in this room is an exceptional experience. The beautiful and comfortable sofas also make it very pleasant to sit in this sublime home theater.

Herman approached us with the request for a cinema room in the basement of his villa in Valkenswaard. This had to be equipped with high-end video and audio equipment and be soundproof to the rest of the house. There was also a desire to use luxury couches instead of cinema seats to create a more homely and lively feel. Of course, it was important that all sound formats could be played and that the picture be of the highest 4K HDR quality.

After visiting our showroom, another requirement was added: Herman was particularly impressed with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond 800 D3 speakers and wanted them integrated into the sound system for when listening to music.

All equipment had to be placed in a technical room next to the home theater room.

We began by creating an insulating shell in the space. As a starting point, the existing beautiful marble floor had to be preserved and remain visible. By building cleverly and connecting closely to the existing structure, we achieved an insulating value of 40dB. This is very high for a single shell and can only be achieved by consistently decoupling everything perfectly everywhere and using enough mass. It is very important to properly calculate this construction. A double studio door ensures that the entrance to the cinema cannot worsen the overall insulation value.

For the interior work, we used a light, acoustically transparent fabric stylishly lit by warm-white LED strips. Behind the fabric are the room's speakers and acoustic adjustments for proper reverberation time. Beautiful spotlights in the ceiling provide ample light when entering the space.

For an "immersive" surround experience of the highest quality, a 7.1.4 Atmos setup was chosen for the "movie mode. The front channels are reproduced by Bowers & Wilkins CWM 8.3 Diamond in-wall speakers. These are built into an extremely sturdy and heavy 'baffle wall' so that resonances have no chance and the speakers can do their job in an ideal acoustic environment. Two Bowers & Wilkins DB1D subwoofers - incorporated into the cabinet below the screen - are used for the low end. For the four surround channels, Bowers & Willkins CWM 8.3 D speakers also serve.

Because the client was very impressed with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond 800 D3 speakers during a demo in our showroom, we also included them in the sound system. A 16-channel Trinnov Altitude16 surround processor's flexibility makes it possible to choose either the Diamond in-walls or the stand-alone speakers to reproduce the sound of the two L/R front channels at the touch of a button.

For an image to match the quality of the sound, a Sony VPL-VW760ES 4K HDR projector with laser light source was installed. That projects its image onto a 3.5m wide "Cinemascope" acoustically transparent screen from Screen Research. The screen is curved for an even more cinematic experience. Under this screen we made a wide cabinet where the subwoofers and Playstation had their place.

To ensure that the second row of viewers also had a good view of the screen, we built a 36 cm high stage, which also serves as a very effective "bass trap. To further address the low damping in the room, we mounted six Mutrox low resonators behind the screen. The stage was upholstered with a luxury carpet that nicely matches the benches and acoustics panels in terms of looks.

For further optimization of the acoustics, we installed a black acoustic stretch ceiling containing warm white spotlights and, matching the other speakers, Bowers & Wilkins CCM 8.5D Atmos speakers.

Control is done with a Savant system through a single Savant Pro X2 remote. All equipment was placed in a 19" rack in a technical room next to the cinema.

What a beautiful home theater this has become! With the fantastic sound quality of the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond series in-walls and the stand-alone Diamond 800 D3 speakers, there is no compromise whatsoever on movie or music reproduction. The Trinnov Altitude16 surround processor and dual Amplitude 8M power amplifiers ensure perfect control of the total of 15 speakers in the room. A room whose perfect acoustics do not detract from the quality of the playback.

It is good to relax on the comfortable sofas. The stylish look of the walls and LED light, aided by the beautiful natural stone floor, create a generous sense of luxury. With careful calculation of acoustics, speaker placement and overall adjustment of picture and sound, the experience is optimal. The programmable remote control makes operating the cinema very easy.
